Work details

Birdcage Inn

Work overview

Jin-a, a 22-year-old sex worker, arrives at the seaside Birdcage Inn. She works at night and spends her days drawing and watching the sea. The family running the motel depends on a share of her earnings, but living with them brings hostility rather than acceptance. Their college-student daughter Hye-mi, who is the same age as Jin-a, rejects her gestures of friendship and insists that they belong to different worlds. When Hye-mi discovers that her boyfriend has visited Jin-a, the divide between the two women deepens. Sharing a roof forces them into an uneasy proximity, with their strained relationship at the centre of the story.
